Mouthguards for Grinding at Newburyport Pediatric Dentistry

Mouthguards for Grinding

Is It Normal for Children to Grind Their Teeth at Night?

Yes. Many children from toddlers to teens – will grind their teeth at night. Tooth grinding is a very normal occurrence in children and in the overwhelming majority of instances, a mouth guard (night guard) is not needed.

Do You Make Night Guards for Kids?

Generally speaking, no. Children grow very quickly, and their bites change frequently as baby teeth exfoliate and permanent teeth erupt; thus, it’s not ideal to make a night guard for a child. However, there are limited circumstances where we would make a night guard for a child or young adult, and we would discuss this with you on a case-by-case basis.

Is a Mouth Guard for grinding the same as a mouth guard for sports?

No. Mouth guards for grinding are often called “night guards” and they are different than the sports guards or athletic guards that your child would wear during sports activities.
